The history of the Capitole de Toulouse

Toulouse’s Capitole is deeply rooted in the history of the pink city and of France as a whole. Its construction began in 1190, when it became the seat of municipal power. The name “Capitole” comes from the Latin “Caput”, meaning “head”, in reference to the city’s government.

It was conceived as the seat of the capitouls, the magistrates responsible for managing the city. Over the centuries, Toulouse’s Capitole has undergone numerous architectural transformations, with each era adding its own touch of grandeur and modernity.

During the 18th century, the Capitole took on its current appearance thanks to architect Guillaume Cammas, who completed the majestic neo-classical facade we know today. Over the centuries, the Capitole’s history has been closely linked to politics and art, as in the case of Jean Jaurès, a lecturer in Toulouse, or Jean-Paul Laurens, a sculptor and painter of the 19th/20th century.

The façade, adorned with eight columns symbolizing the eight original capitouls, embodies the power and stability of municipal power. The pink bricks, typical of Toulouse, lend the building a warmth and elegance that captivate the eye. Much more than the Hôtel de Ville, Toulouse’s Capitole is the center of the city.

Place du Capitole is without doubt the beating heart of Toulouse. Located right in the center of town, it’s a focal point for locals and vacationers alike. Inspired by Rome’s Galerie Farnèse, this room, inaugurated in 1883, is adorned with monumental frescoes and busts of great Toulouse figures. Visitors to the Capitole can also admire the Cour Henri IV, named after the equestrian statue of King Henri IV, a reminder of Toulouse’s historical ties with the French monarchy.
